Things to See and Do in West Vancouver and North Vancouver
Glimpse of History
The communities of North Vancouver and West Vancouver are connected to Vancouver by the Lion’s Gate Bridge, which vaults over a few hundred meters of sea. One interesting feature of North Vancouver is the winding railway tracks that date back at least a hundred years, which you can still ride on by taking a journey from the North Shore train station. Hop aboard the Rocky Mountaineer to climb the scenic mountains of Whistler.
Another historic attraction that we recommend is a visit to the Point Atkinson Lighthouse at Lighthouse Park. Built in 1874, the lighthouse sits atop immense granite boulders at the entranceway to the Burrard Inlet.
Many of the most impressive parts of West Vancouver and North Vancouver are found high up! In addition to gazing upon breathtaking views, you can experience the mountains by hiking skiing and tobogganing. Ride the Gondola up Grouse Mountain and be on the watch for local grizzlies. Or for a hard-core workout to challenge your physical and mental strength, hike the Grouse Grind!
To spend some relaxing leisure time outdoors with your family, spend an afternoon at the Park & Tilford Gardens, a pleasant oasis in North Vancouver. Eight different theme gardens await you, spread out over almost three acres of land – with bridges, fountains, a colonnade, and intricate gates. Another fantastic family destination is Maplewood Farms, the last remaining farm on Vancouver’s North Shore. There is a petting zoo, pony rides, and plenty of hands-on activities for little ones to enjoy.
Best Bites in Vancouver’s North Shore
West Vancouver and North Vancouver offer a wide variety of restaurants to please every palate. For a stunning backdrop to your meal, our eye doctors recommend that you dine at The Observatory Restaurant, atop Grouse Mountain, or at Pier 7 Restaurant in North Vancouver. For unique flavor, Honey Doughnuts is not-to-be-missed! (We urge you to try the Eggs Benny along with your doughnut, for authentic yum.) For a unique experience, the Tomahawk Restaurant serves burgers alongside amazing aboriginal artwork. After a day taking in all the local sites, take a seat at Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers to sample local craft beer and spirits.
